Meanwhile there are supported and search faces were designed to have distinct colors to highlight matches based on those three levels (the same goes for ivy/helm/vertico/etc). Maybe they "don't fit" well, but I did it on purpose to avoid mishmash with other faces.

I was thinking about some alternative for match faces as an option. Can you specify more clearly what you wish for, so I can assist?

I have happily lived with the current orderless faces, but i think at least an option to have a bg color would be really nice. It makes it easier to spot matches, and i personally think it looks better. I took the second screenshot by doomifying kaolin-dark using a weird hack with the ewal, theme-magic and ewal-doom-themes packages. I could post the configuration if you are interested.

doom-themes seem to use a a color mapping similar to this:

• orderless-match-face-0 . font-lock-builtin-face
• orderless-match-face-1 . font-lock-keyword-face
• orderless-match-face-2 . font-lock-string-face
• orderless-match-face-3 . warning

I like that the last one uses a color akin to the warning face

I have experimented with orderless, diredfl, emabrk and anzu faces. You might want to check them out, and add the changes deliberately under options. I will also play with magit faces and lsp faces. My fork is intended for my personal use. I'm sure I broke 200+ code styles. This is the repo
